A meeting for the purpose of organizing a post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
and completing arrangements was called by H. Everett Pope, he being invested
by such authority by the Adjutant General, Veterans of Foreign Wars with headquarters
at 32 Union Square, New York City. Comrade Leo Wood a member of Pittsburg Post
gave a brief talk and a few ideas as to the purpose of this organization. Comrade
Cleaveland Hilson, member at large delivered a very instructive talk stating the
reasons why one eligible should join and the benefits derived therefrom. Upon the
authority of the Commander pro-tem person so desiring were requested before further
business could be discussed, to sign applications for membership and charter.
The rules were then read and discussed and after meeting with the approval of all
the oath was administered.
Names and suggestions were requested of the members as to the name of the Post, the
following ones being submitted: Tulsa, Oil City, Petroleum, Sequoyah, Jack Cowan,
Belleau, Sedan, Indian, Outlaw and Sooner. On an elimination vote calling the last
name suggested first the following vote was recorded. Sooner -1 Outlaw, Indian and
Sedan -0, Belleau- 1, Jack, Cowan -5, Sequoyah-2, Petroleum-5, Oil City-0, Tulsa
12. Tulsa Post was selected and by a motion entertained by the chair was made
unanimous. Petroleum as second choice and John Cowan as third.
The Commander pro-tem stated the various offices to be filled, their duties, etc.
H. E. Pope and T. C. Hopkins were nominated for Commander, but upon advise and
request of latter his nomination was withdrawn. H. E. Pope was chosen unanimously
as our Commander. R. T. Warner was voted in over P. Havenstrite by a vote of 14 as
against 9, for Sr. Vice Commander. P. Havenstrite was chosen unanimously as Jr. Vice
Commander. For Quartermaster Cleaveland Hilson on a vote of 17 as against 3 for
R. Bradshaw, and 1 for E. Brown. Dr. Capps elected to the office of surgeon unanimously.
For Officer of the Day C. R. Worley, was chosen by a vote of 16 as against 8 for J.
Pixley. The office of Chaplain by suggestion being held open until some future time.
The following were nominated to serve in the capacity of Trustees. Bradshaw for a
period of eighteen months, J. Pixley for twelve and J. Carr for 6 months. The vote
was tabulated as follows: Pixley 10, Bradshaw 12, Hopkins 5, Carr 10, Brown 2, Wood 5.
The officers were duly installed and oath administered by Commander. On a motion
entertained by the chair E. H. Brown was unanimously selected to fill the post of
Adjutant. The officers of Tulsa Post No. 577, Veterans of Foreign Wars now stand as
Follows: Commander, H. Everett Pope, Sr. Vice Commander Ross T. Warner, Jr.,
Jr. Vice Commander Paul Havenstrite, Quartermaster Cleaveland Hilson, Surgeon,
Dr. Capps, Officer of the Day, Charles R. Worley, Chaplain (Open) Trustees,
Roy Bradshaw, John W Pixley and John G. Carr, for Adjutant, Edward H. Brown.
The question as to the fees or dues was tabled until next meeting, on motion by
Comrade Hilson. A committee on By-Laws etc., was appointed by the chair to serve
and report as soon as possible.
By unanimous consent of the Post the Charter will be held open until the close of
the first meeting in March, 1921. It was regularly moved that the next meeting
place be in the County Court House, unless some more desirable place can be found,
the first Tuesday, January 4, 1921.Meeting adjourned 10:30 P.M.
